Academy Apologizes For Asian-American Jokes During Oscars Telecast

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- The motion picture academy has apologized for jokes made about Asian Americans during last month's Oscar telecast.

The show drew low ratings while the lack of African American nominees had prompted complaints about diversity prior to the broadcast.

But jokes told by host Chris Rock during the show also prompted complaints from prominent Asian-American members of the entertainment industry.

Angela Guanzon remembers learning about human trafficking growing up in the Philippines, but she never imagined that one day she would be a trafficking survivor.

"All I heard about was human or sex trafficking—not labor trafficking," Guanzon, 38, told NBC News.

After graduating from college, Guanzon struggled to find work to support her parents and five siblings. With her father's health rapidly deteriorating, she looked for opportunities outside of the Philippines. In 2005, she was recruited to work as a caretaker at a residential care facility in Long Beach, California.

Asian Student Reports Racial Slurs, Eggs Thrown at Him at USC

EXPOSITION PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An investigation is underway into a possible hate crime at the University of Southern California after a suspect used racial slurs and eggs as a weapon against a student.
 
USC's Cardinal Gardens is a student housing complex where coeds pay more than $10,000 a year to live. That is where business major Ivan Tsang said he was targeted with eggs and racial epithets over the weekend.

He posted pictures of the egg assault on his Facebook page.

Hate Crime Charges Filed In Assault Against Sikh Bus Driver

Authorities in Los Angeles have filed hate crime charges against a man who brutally assaulted a Sikh bus driver and called him a "terrorist" and "suicide bomber" during the attack last November.

Balwinder Jit Singh had sustained serious injuries during the November 6 assault and was taken to a hospital with a disfigured face and infection in his eye that required weeks of recovery.

O.C. Offers GOP Example of Asian Outreach

Orange County could hold the key to Republican success nationwide with the fastest growing slice of the electorate, Asian American voters.

Asians have tended to favor Democrats in recent years, a trend that reached a high-water mark in 2012 when 73 percent voted for President Barack Obama.

But the county GOP had a burst of success in electing Asian candidates two years ago, when three Asian Republicans won seats in the state Legislature. Three more serve on the five-member county Board of Supervisors.

Asian-Americans Await Possible Supreme Court Nominee

LOS ANGELES—

Two immigrants from Asia are possible nominees for the Supreme Court. The Asian American community are eagerly awaiting President Barack Obama’s announcement.  

“Asians in general are becoming more involved in the political system as judiciary members of the bench, so it really is just a testament of the times for Asians to now be nominated for this open seat that’s available,” said Pamela Thakur, former president and vice president of the South Asian Bar Association of Southern California’s Public Interest Foundation.
