LONG BEACH, Calif. — In middle school, Nicole Bennett-Pote was an honor roll standout even as the walls around her appeared to be crumbling. Her brother was a gang member and her mother was an addict.
Bennett-Pote, who is part Japanese, made a vow then that she would never fall into that life. She stuck to softball and stayed at school everyday until the sun went down to avoid trouble at home.
Those who work with older adults may generally know that the population is growing in size very quickly. In fact, Los Angeles County’s entire 50-plus population grew 28% between 2000 and 2010. What most people don’t know is that the Asian American 50-plus population grew 56% during the same time. In contrast, the entire population of Los Angeles County saw 3% growth during this time while the general Asian American population saw 20% growth.
Public colleges and universities across the country have been struggling for years to open up access for low-income youth and youth of color, even as ever-higher levels of education and skills are needed in the job market. The challenges have grown as states have cut funding for higher education. Now, the Supreme Court is considering a challenge to race-conscious admissions at the University of Texas, a ruling that could further restrict educational opportunities across the nation.
While conservative on some issues, Asian American voters in California have long been known to lean Democratic. But new polling data shows that the electorate may be shifting further to the left.
Dan Ichinose, demographic research project director of the civil rights group Asian Americans Advancing Justice LA, led a phone poll of over 3,500 registered voters conducted between October and March.

While Asian Americans as a group appear well-off, a new report released Wednesday finds that many elderly Korean and Cambodians are more likely to live in poverty and without access to health care in L.A. County.
The report, produced by AARP and the nonprofit group Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Los Angeles, examines the status of the 480,000 Asian Americans and 11,000 Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders over age 50 living in the county.
Our helplines prioritize assistance to low-income persons in the following areas of law: discrimination, family, immigration, public benefits, employment, housing, and civil rights.
