Undocumented Students Find Solace, Support in Community Hubs Started by Educators

When Anna first walked into the DREAM Center at Los Angeles’ Lincoln High School, she was a shy teenager who could barely speak up. Today, Anna says she feels like she has the power and confidence to one day become a leader in the fight for immigration reform.

Los Angeles Asian Groups Launch Big U.S. Citizenship Drive

LOS ANGELES — Advocacy groups serving various ethnic communities launched a new program April 6 to increase the number of Asians and other minorities applying for U.S. citizenship.

Congressional District 27 Representative Judy Chu (Dem-California) enumerated four reasons why citizenship is important: “First you can protect yourself, second, you can protect your family, third, you can have a better life, and fourth, you can vote!”

New Campaign Encourages Asian American Immigrants to Apply for Citizenship

Non-profit organization Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Los Angeles, in partnership with community-based organizations and local government, on Wednesday, April 6, announced new campaign to encourage and boost the number of Asian American immigrants applying for US citizenship.

The campaign, “Endless possibilities. Citizenship Now!” is a coordinated effort of more than 10 organizations, government agencies, and offices of elected officials.

California’s Asian Voters Could Deliver Poll Wins–Study

LOS ANGELES — Asian Americans could deliver election victories to campaigns and candidates who understand what motivates Asian American voters, says a poll done by an influential Asian American organization.

The California-wide poll released March 30 was conducted by Advancing Justice-LA Demographic Research project headed by Daniel Ichinose, M.A., who reported: “It’s issues, not party affiliation, that drive how we vote.”

Chinese Daily News Workers Win Settlement

LOS ANGELES — A diverse crowd of workers, advocates and journalists gathered at the UCLA Labor Center to celebrate a class action victory for more than 200 employees of Chinese Daily News.

After more than a decade of hard fought litigation, they obtained a $7.8 million settlement against one of the leading Chinese language newspapers in the country. This class action victory represents one of the largest wage justice settlements in Asian American history.

Why Is It Still Okay to Make Fun of Asians?

At the Oscars last month, in a performance for which he’d be praised for skewering Hollywood’s lack of diversity, host Chris Rock took a moment to introduce PricewaterhouseCoopers, the accounting firm that tallies the votes. “They sent us their most dedicated, accurate, and hard-working representatives,” he said. “I want you to please welcome Ming Zhu, Bao Ling, and David Moskowitz.” Three Asian kids in tuxedos walked onto the stage, briefcases in hand. “If anybody is upset about this joke,” Rock added, “just tweet about it on your phone, which was also made by these kids.”
