Working with APALC’s Demographic Research Project, Voting Rights Project staff achieved several important victories during the 2011 California redistricting process, which for the first time was conducted by an independent citizens commission rather than the state legislature. The commission was charged with redrawing legislative and congressional boundaries to correspond to population shifts reflected in new census data.
I am a graduate of the LDIRs in Health class of 2005-2006. I felt compelled to join the LDIR Alumni Network because of the powerful impact the LDIR program had on my personal life, and because of the powerful work LDIR continues to do in communities that usually don’t have a voice: immigrants, queer communities, our youth, and single mothers.
Mr. Li, a low-income, limited English speaking middle-aged Chinese immigrant, contacted APALC after his landlord filed a lawsuit alleging Mr. Li needed to move out immediately and owed $1,650 in back rent.
Mr. Li had been given only a three-day notice to pay rent or move out before he was sued.
