A Family Educates to Prevent Hate Crimes: The Case of Joseph Ileto

Stewart Kwoh

Joseph Ileto was a Filipino American postal carrier who was shot and killed by an avowed white supremacist in Los Angeles in 1999.  The killer shot and wounded five Jewish youth on the same day.  The Ileto family has spoken out against hate crimes against racial minorities, LGBT individuals and those of diverse religious backgrounds since the day their son and brother was killed because of his race.
