Youth and Parent

The mission of Advancing Justice - LA’s School-based Leadership Development in Interethnic Relations is to empower school communities to improve inter-ethnic group relations, student academic achievement, democratic participation and community involvement.

The program seeks to provide social justice curriculum training and support for Los Angeles schools with a special emphasis on secondary campuses in the Central Los Angeles area, where campus and community resources and support are provided to create model schools through school course, student participatory research, teacher training and community service projects.

Advancing Justice - LA also offers a Parent Leadership Program for parents of K-12 students in the San Gabriel Valley and Lincoln Heights/Chinatown neighborhood to provide them with tools to actively engage with, and advocate for, their child’s education.  Parents take part in a six-week academy and a six-week facilitation training and leadership training. The sessions are conducted in English with simultaneous interpretation and written materials in Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Spanish.

Parents and guardians also can take advantage of the program’s adult literacy project, which gives adults a basic introduction to the English language through a critical perspective.

Both the School-based Leadership Development in Interethnic Relations and Parent Leadership program take part in Advancing Justice - LA’s Annual Family Forum, a community gathering that brings together parents, youth and community resources to provide support on issues such as immigration, housing, and employment.
